Product Overview
The Murakoshi Earthquake-proof latches prevent cabinets from violently swinging open during an earthquake preventing unforeseen accidents that can result in injury or blocked escape routes from falling objects.
Now anyone can install the Murakoshi Earthquake-proof latch with PFR-TSAα version. The PFR-TSAα is a seismic latch designed for hinge-style, frameless cabinet doors*.
The PFR-TSAα is the easy-to-install, DIY version of the PFR-TSA (for professionals only). With the integrated main body (latch), construction jig, and the receiver (catch) and double-sided tape already attached to the latch and the catch, positioning during installation is easier than ever. Also, the catch mounted on the cabinet door-side has a self-adjusting design to guarantee a secure latch every time.
* User discretion is advised, the PFR-TSAα latches are designed for frameless style cabinets and are fully mounted flush to the top of the cabinet wall. If installing the latches on non-frameless style cabinets, it is the user's responsibility to ensure proper installation and operation of the latches. Some customers have modified their face-frame cabinets by creating an additional surface for the latch to mount unto. It is very important to have that added surface and latch securely mounted to the cabinet and level with the cabinet frame. If not properly installed, the latches can automatically lock because it is sensing that the surface is not level. If this occurs, see the "PFR-TSAα Force-Release" instructions in the Documents section below.

When large tremors occur, a situation may arise in which the contents of the furniture are left leaning against the door. In this situation, the lock mechanism will lock the latch meaning the furniture's contents will not fall out. You can release the lock in this situation by pushing the slightly open door to fully close it.

Mounting Conditions
Condition 1
The furniture must be level. concealed hinges must be correctly adjusted.

Condition 2
The mounting points on the door and the cabinet must be made of wood. (This product cannot be affixed to glass, metal, etc.)

Condition 3
This product can only be used on furniture with a 'concealed hinge with catch' (spring).
※ However, there are situations in which you cannot use this product on 'push-open doors'.
Condition 4
The following condition is the recommended door size.

Hole sizes of catch : Diaφ 0.08" ~ 0.1", Depth 0.2" ~ 0.4"

I have been writing and speaking about earthquake safety for 2 decades and have been studying different kinds of quake-resistant cabinet latches since the 1990s. This is the one that I like the best. Latches where you have to actively move a lever to open the door are inconvenient. Latches where shaking makes something fall into a place that stops the door from opening don't always work; I don't trust them. For many years, I advocated push latches (touch latches), which result in a door that won't open unless you push it in first. I still like these but they involve an extra step, they can baffle guests, they require cabinet doors to be slightly "tented" forward when closed since you need space behind them into which to push, and there is the slight but real possibility of the door shaking themselves open under some conditions (I have seen this in quake simulations). This Murakoshi latch is great because after installation, the door looks perfectly normal, the opening and closing is completely natural (no thought or extra step involved), and they are very effective. The only minor issues are that they are more expensive than most similar latches (but you get what you pay for; the mechanism is complex) and they are a real pain to install correctly. But this is the one that I install when moving to a new home.
Reviewing the actual product is not easy because thankfully we have had no earthquakes to test it. I can definitely say, though, that Rafael was as helpful a representative as you could have. He answered multiple questions immediately, both via email and phone and even late on a Friday afternoon. Latches themselves are difficult to attach, but my helper thought the diagram made sense. He installed 8-1/2 sets of them in about 2-1/2 hours. The diagram are confusing in two ways. First, I had a hard time telling from them which kind of cabinet ceiling edge I had. Rafael worked hard to help me figure it out. Second, while instructions said that the locks might fail on cabinets beyond a certain height, it wasn't clear if using 2 locks might solve the problem.
One of my locks come open and kept the cabinet door from closing. Manually pushing the mechanism back in solved the problem. The other locks have been fine. I like it that they don't keep me from using the cabinet. Only gave 4 stars because it is not easy to install.
